A master salt shovel by Matthew Cluff, Norfolk VA, circa 1806.

Mathew Cluff, Norfolk Virginia and later in Elizabeth City NC. A master salt shovel, in early form with a coffin handle. Cluff was in business by himself in Norfolk by 1806 and was there until 1816. This early shovel is most likely from his early work in Norfolk. Slightly under five inches long, there is a bit of roughness on bottom of handle. The maker's mark is quite strong. This is the first piece by this important Norfolk maker that I have had in 25 years.
