A mid-nineteenth century Tea Caddy, made by the partnership of
silversmiths Stephan Mayerhofer & Carl Klinkosch, Vienna, Austria,
1856. This beautifully made piece is quite heavy at about eleven and
one-half ounces troy and stands six and one-half inches to the top of
handle. Resting on ball feet, the main body of the caddy exhibits eight
panels, one of which shows the monogram "M". The Austrian hallmark for
Vienna as well as the maker's mark is struck on the bottom of the caddy as
well as the underside of the screw-on lid. The date
"1856" is included in the hallmark, giving us the exact year of manufacture.
The interior of the piece as well as the underside of the lid is entirely
covered in gold vermeil that remains intact. Overall condition of the
caddy is exceptionally fine.
