A continental beaker, quite early, that appears to have Spanish hallmarks.
Translated, The Exalted Alphonso, King,
Conqueror and Peace Maker 1449.
Alphonso V, was the son of Ferdinand I, and became King of Aragon and
Sicily. After defeating King Rene of Naples, he
assumed that title as well.
We are not experts in identifying early continental silver, but the cup is
certainly early, and the hallmarks seem to be Spanish. The portrait is in a
medallion, which is a close representation of an early struck medal likely
executed to commemorate Alphonso sometime after his death in 1458. The
portrait is flanked by a helmet and crown and the detail is quite good. Only
a small dent in the base keeps the cup from being called pristine. Height
about 3 1/4 inches, weight is about four oz. troy.
