A sterling silver luncheon set marked by
Wm. Wilson McGrew, Cincinnati. McGrew was a third generation silversmith,
his grandfather, Alexander McGrew, having worked in that craft there as
early as 1805. Wm. Wilson McGrew worked as a silversmith and jeweler from
1859.
This nearly complete service for twelve contains:
All pieces are marked either sterling or 925. and all are in excellent
condition. Unusual to find a full set from the 1865 period when this set was
sold.
Although marked only by McGrew, this pattern resembles the "Florentine"
pattern by John R. Wendt, a NY maker of silver who was out of business by
1869. This service is in an associated silver chest that is also in good
order. Fine quality and heavy weight.
