A coin silver Pap Boat by John Mood, Charleston, South Carolina. This piece
is five and one-half inches in length and weighs 2.6 ounces troy. Of early
form, this rare example of a pap boat is likely from Mood's earlier working
period in Charleston that began in 1813. However, most of his earliest
years found him working in partnership with his father under the name "Peter
Mood & Son." After 1821, John was working alone and it is most likely that
the above piece was produced in the decade of the 1820s. The pap boat was a
somewhat popular form in the 18th century but by the early 19th century was
far less so, with very few known, although rare examples, such as the one
here, were obviously produced when requested. This great example shows a
few very minor bumps from normal use, but remains in attractive and highly
collectable condition with no repairs. Really a museum piece.
