A coin silver sugar bowl by Emile Profilet, Natchez, Mississippi, circa
1830-60.
Profilet, born 1801 in Paris, France, was in New Orleans
working at his craft in 1820, and likely left shortly thereafter, for his
name does not appear in the later city directories. He was probably in
Natchez for some time when he married Maria Quegles in 1830. Maria was from
a prominent Natchez family. She died in 1836. Profilet became the leading
silversmith and jeweler in Natchez, where he died in 1868.
This small bowl is about five inches across including handles, stands about
2 3/4 inches tall and weighs four ounces troy. Well marked on the bottom.
The inside bottom of the bowl shows an old repair mark that is virtually
invisible from the outside bottom of the piece.
Else the bowl is in pristine condition. Interesting form with the classical
"scroll" handles.
