A twelve and one-half inch coin silver ladle by Hyde & Goodrich, of New
Orleans, in partnership there beginning in 1829. This large ladle has a
handle form that reflects the prevailing French influence of the day, seen
on other early silver from the Mississippi Delta and even as far upstream as
St. Louis. Later handles
from H&G silver are of the "fiddle thread" pattern, not really related to
this piece. Other examples of this French influence in spoon and ladle
handles by early New Orleans silversmiths are illustrated in "Crescent City
Silver" published in 1980. Aside from a couple of extremely minor bowl
bumps (see photos) this piece is in superb condition. Very heavy
construction at 7.27 ounces troy. I would date this piece as no later than
the 1830s. $1500.
