Agricultural Award Cup
by Adolph Himmel, New Orleans
This interesting cup is engraved PREMIUM/
Claiborne Agricul/ SOCIETY/ 1877
Adolph Himmel arrived in New Orleans in 1852 and after a brief partnership
with C. Kuchler, began working for the firm of Hyde and Goodrich, the
leading silversmiths and jewelers of that city.
In 1869 Himmel opened his
own establishment and produced silver bearing his name. This cup is a fine
example of his later work and bears the date 1877 which was the year that
Himmel died.
Interesting is the Gothic arches, the floral repousse work,
and the unusual gadrooning
at the base of the cup, along with the naturalistic handle.
Claiborne
County is in the far North of Louisiana, and this is the first agricultural
piece I have seen from that county.
The "Trident" gadrooning around base of cup
is surely unique.
A significant agricultural cup by this New Orleans maker.
Cup measures nearly four inches to top of handle and weighs about four
ounces troy.
