Shovel by Charles Plimpton, Lexington, Kentucky, circa 1815

Item Description

A nearly five inch shovel by Charles Plimpton, Lexington, Kentucky, circa 1815. This finless and coffin handled piece
is certainly an early rarity in Kentucky Silver. Plimpton is now known to have worked in Lexington earlier than suggested in the Boultinghouse book. Plimpton was in partnership with Samuel Ayres for a very short time, circa 1816. Several early
silver cups, as well as a few spoons are all that has been seen
by this maker. This seems to be the only known shovel. Excellent condition, strong maker’s mark, and un-monogramed.
